 ‘How’s the new business going?’

‘It’s going well. Lots of work. Long hours. Finding it hard to juggle everything and I’m still trying to figure out the whole work-life-balance thing, but I’m sure it’ll sort itself out, eventually. It’ll all be worth it in the end.’

Stop it. You’re trying to be all things to all people.

The thing is, you can’t. You just can’t. It’s impossible, so stop trying to give 100% of yourself to your job, your family, your friends and to whatever or whoever it is.

You’re causing yourself unnecessary stress and damaging your own wellbeing.

It’s time to stop right now.

There’s only one you (and only 24 hours in the day)

You’re an individual. There’s only one of you and, just like everyone else, you have 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week and 365 days in a year. No more and no less.

Now, imagine your life is a cake, a truly tremendous cake.

You can’t share more of a cake than what’s there (no matter how magnificent the cake is!).

Life is complex, with many different aspects that demand your attention.

The most you can ever give any of them is 100%.

Even that isn’t always possible. Something’s got to give.

Not your health and not your life — and definitely not both!

Breathe

Now, ask yourself for a moment: when was the last time you stopped to breathe, calm down and evaluate the situation? Think about it.

Those areas of your life that are demanding your attention and stressing you out need you to be at your best.

However, it could just be in your head. They might not require as much of your attention as you think. In fact, they might not even call for it at all.

What they might really want you to do is pursue more happiness in your life.

The power of setting goals

Goal setting is extremely powerful.

It provides you with focus. You can make life choices and evaluate these and situations for the future. That future could be tomorrow, next month, next year or five years or more from now.

You could set a main goal, which you aim to achieve within 5 or 10 years, but also set some (smaller) goals in between. If your goals aren’t clear, you’re highly unlikely to ever accomplish them.

You may want that promotion, new car or smaller dress size desperately… to the point it’s making you feel stressed, anxious and frustrated; and it is so because you can’t cram everything (you think) you must do to get to where you want to be.

Again, stop letting it overwhelm you. Establish your goals and what’s important to you, and then take the next step which is to....

Plan

That’s right: plan. It’s as simple as that.

You’ve decided what you want. Now you must think about how you’re going to get it.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What would you have to do to get it?

  • How much money will you need?

  • Where will you find the money?

  • When do you want it by?

  • How much time will you need to commit each day/week/month to achieve the goal?

  • Who or what in your life will this commitment affect?

  • Who will get the cake crumbs — and are they/you willing to make that sacrifice?

Most people confuse their hopes and dreams with actual goals.

The fact is, the majority of those who do set goals don’t achieve them. You only have to look at all the people who fail to keep their New Year’s resolution to know that.

According to estimates, less than 10% of people achieve their goals — which is shocking and depressing in equal measures!

That certainly doesn’t have to be you. Often, these people fail because they don’t have a plan. They’ve put no thought into how they’re going to reach these goals. They’ve taken no action or have only taken a few steps towards meeting them it and then they expect everything to just happen for them as if by magic! Not happening.

To plan is to take control of your own path, of your own destiny, and it demolishes stress.

You know where you want to go, by when and how you’re going to get there. It’s a powerful stressbuster, one that lowers your stress levels instantly because now you know you can do it. More importantly, you know what the next step is.
